Overview 

This prompt asks students to explore the relationship between causes and effects in a text. 

Follow these steps to customize this explanatory/comparison task:
  1. Review the steps in the handout "Plan for Write to the Source."
  2. Review the sample task and then fill in the task template fields below the sample task.
  3. Review the handout "Explanatory Writing Rubric." Adapt as necessary.

Sample task

Essential Question:  How is my life easier or more difficult based on who I am and where I was born?

Text Title(s):  Read You Forgot Your Skirt, Amelia Bloomer!

Suggested Writing Product:  Work with a partner to create a sequence chart showing how one event can lead to, or cause, another. Use your chart to help you write a newspaper article illustrating the relationship between causes and effects in your text.

Additional Task Demand:  Elaborate on your cause and effect writing by using facts and details from the text to explain how each cause led to the effect.
